Your HBE-5G product questions answered about the HBE-5G Outdoor and Indoor Routers, our custom HBE Yakabit firmware and our 5G antennas.

HBE Yakabit firmware

What is the custom HBE Yakabit firmware?5G-OD-Rtr5G-ID-Rtr

Both HBE-5G routers run HBE Yakabit's own custom firmware, shown simply as "HBE Firmware" with its build number. It is what makes these routers different from a carrier's box:

  • Two logins: your own simple "My Wi-Fi" page, and a separate technician login for setup, monitoring and support.
  • Monitored and supported by HBE: every unit checks in with HBE, so we can see its signal history and help remotely.
  • Built for 5G: detailed 5G and LTE signal readings, dual SIM failover and a modem that heals itself.

See everything it does:

What can I do on my own "My Wi-Fi" page?5G-OD-Rtr5G-ID-Rtr
  • See the connection and signal in plain words, and every mesh unit with how well it is linked.
  • Change the Wi-Fi name and password, change your own login password and restart the router.
  • Run a speed test measured from the router itself (3 per day), with recent results.
  • Choose a dark look or a high-contrast light look, remembered per device.

It is a separate login with no access to the technical settings, so nothing can be broken.

Can I pause the internet or set a bedtime for my kids?5G-OD-Rtr5G-ID-Rtr

Yes. On your "My Wi-Fi" page you can see every device on the Wi-Fi, give devices friendly names and group them by person. Then pause the internet for a person (homework, dinner) or set a bedtime. A device that shouldn't be there can be blocked, and it can't rejoin any unit.

Can visitors use my Wi-Fi without getting onto my devices?5G-OD-Rtr5G-ID-Rtr

Yes. A separate guest network keeps visitors off your home or office devices, with its own name and password. Guests can join by pointing a phone camera at a QR code, no typing, and you can print a Wi-Fi card for the fridge or front desk. Our technicians can also keep guests apart from each other, set a shared speed limit and put the guest network on a schedule.

How does HBE Yakabit support my router remotely?5G-OD-Rtr5G-ID-Rtr

Through the firmware's technician tools: secure remote access for HBE technicians, a regular check-in and bandwidth report to HBE's monitoring, signal history, and a health-check report. When you call, we can see what the router sees, often without a visit.

Will a firmware update erase my settings?5G-OD-Rtr5G-ID-Rtr

No. Updates are installed with a one-file firmware installer and keep the settings.

What happens if I press the reset button?5G-OD-Rtr5G-ID-Rtr

Holding it for 10 seconds restores your customer settings (such as the Wi-Fi name and password) and keeps the technician settings, so your 5G service keeps working. A full factory reset, with a confirmation step, is only available to HBE technicians.

Will my phone calls stay clear when others are streaming?5G-OD-Rtr5G-ID-Rtr

Yes. The firmware gives voice traffic (SIP and RTP) priority, set up by HBE to match your phones or phone system, and smart queue management keeps the connection responsive when it is busy.

Choosing a router

Which router is right for me, Outdoor or Indoor?5G-OD-Rtr5G-ID-Rtr
HBE-5G Outdoor Router

Mounts outside on a wall, pole or roof, away from the walls and roofing that weaken the signal. Best where indoor signal is weak or in rural areas. IP67 metal case.

HBE-5G Indoor Router

All in one box inside: 5G modem, Wi-Fi 6, three wired ports and a wired backup line. Best where the signal indoors is good.

We will recommend the right one when we check your address.

How much do the routers cost?5G-OD-Rtr5G-ID-Rtr

The HBE-5G Outdoor Router is $549.00 (MSRP $699.60) and the HBE-5G Indoor Router is $499.00 (MSRP $599.00). On a 2-year agreement the router costs you nothing, on a 1-year agreement you pay half, and month-to-month you pay the full price.

Can I buy a router without a 5G service plan?5G-OD-Rtr5G-ID-Rtr

No. Our 5G routers are sold only with a 5G Service Package. Each one is set up and provisioned for your carrier and your service before it ships. See the plans for T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon, or our 5G Carrier FAQs.

Which carriers do the routers work with?5G-OD-Rtr5G-ID-Rtr

AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. Both routers support 5G in both network modes (SA and NSA) and 4G LTE, and have two SIM slots.

Installation & signal

How is the Outdoor Router mounted and powered?5G-OD-Rtr

It mounts on a wall, pole or rooftop. One PoE network cable carries both power and internet between the outdoor router and the inside equipment, so no outlet is needed at the mount. Because it runs over PoE, the router can be mounted up to 300+ feet from your home or business, wherever the signal is best.

Will the Outdoor Router survive the weather?5G-OD-Rtr

Yes. Its IP67 metal case protects it from rain, sun, snow and thunderstorms, and it runs from -20°C to +50°C (-4°F to 122°F).

How do I find the best spot for the router?5G-OD-Rtr5G-ID-Rtr

If you are installing the router yourself (DIY), the custom HBE Yakabit software has an easy-to-read, very accurate signal meter to help you find the perfect location. The Outdoor Router also has a 4-bar signal meter on the unit and a live aiming page that shows the "best so far" reading while it is positioned.

For difficult locations, our technicians can choose the bands and lock the router to a tower.

Do you install it, or do I set it up myself?5G-OD-Rtr5G-ID-Rtr

Either way. Every router is tested and provisioned before it ships, so many sites are simple plug-and-play. If you are within a certain radius of HBE Yakabit Corp, our techs will install the system. If you are outside our area, we ship you the equipment and are just a phone call away to help you get up and running.

Wi-Fi & mesh

Does the Outdoor Router give me Wi-Fi inside?5G-OD-Rtr

The Outdoor Router has its own Wi-Fi 6 for setup on site, for use outdoors, or to send to a mesh router indoors. For Wi-Fi inside, it feeds an HBE-AX3000 (or your own router or switch) over its network cable, for whole-home Wi-Fi and mesh.

How much space does the Indoor Router's Wi-Fi cover?5G-ID-Rtr

Its dual-band Wi-Fi 6 (AX3000) covers a home or small office on its own. For larger spaces, add HBE-AX3000 mesh units.

How does mesh Wi-Fi work with HBE-AX3000 units?5G-OD-Rtr5G-ID-Rtr

The mesh units work as one Wi-Fi network with one name and password. They link to the main router by secure (WPA3) Wi-Fi or by cable, follow the main router's Wi-Fi channels automatically, and you can see every unit and how well it is linked on your "My Wi-Fi" page. HBE sets up the pairing.

What is smart steering?5G-ID-Rtr

The Indoor Router moves phones, laptops and TVs that can use both bands to the faster 5 GHz band when their signal is strong, and hands a device to the nearest mesh unit as you walk from room to room. Devices are only asked to move, so smart-home gadgets are never pushed off.

Why does my Wi-Fi stay on the same channels?5G-OD-Rtr5G-ID-Rtr

On purpose. New routers start on 2.4 GHz channel 1 and 5 GHz channel 36, and radar (DFS) channels are never used, because they make 5 GHz wait or drop out. A router found on one moves back to channel 36 by itself.

Connection & backup

What does dual SIM do for me?5G-OD-Rtr5G-ID-Rtr

If one SIM's connection drops, the router moves to the second SIM by itself. The second slot also gives built-in hardware redundancy, so a backup slot is always ready as your equipment ages.

Can I plug in a wired internet line as a backup?5G-ID-Rtr

Yes, on the Indoor Router. Plug another internet line into the WAN port and it takes over automatically when 5G is down, then switches back by itself. The WAN port can also be set the other way round (the wired line as main, 5G as backup), or used as a fourth LAN port, which is the default.

Can I keep using my own router or firewall?5G-OD-Rtr5G-ID-Rtr

Yes. The Indoor Router can hand its 5G public address to your own router or firewall (IP passthrough). The Outdoor Router feeds a router or switch inside over its network cable, so your current network can stay in place.

How many wired ports do the routers have?5G-OD-Rtr5G-ID-Rtr
  • HBE-5G Outdoor Router: one 2.5 Gb Ethernet port, which also brings in its power (PoE).
  • HBE-5G Indoor Router: three gigabit LAN ports and one gigabit WAN port, for a PC, TV, game console or phone system.
What if the 5G connection gets stuck?5G-OD-Rtr5G-ID-Rtr

The firmware heals itself: a stuck 5G modem is power-cycled and reconnected without restarting the router. HBE can also set a scheduled reboot and an optional connection watchdog.

How fast can the routers go?5G-OD-Rtr5G-ID-Rtr

Up to 2.5 Gbps download on 5G (theoretical maximums of the 5G module). Your actual speed depends on your service plan's speed tier, the signal and tower traffic.

5G antennas

Which antenna do I need: the 4×4 MIMO or the 8dBi Omni?5G-OD-4X4-Ant8dBi-OD-Omni
HBE-5G 4×4 MIMO Outdoor Antenna

A directional antenna aimed at the tower: 7 to 12 dBi of gain (averaging 10–12), for the highest throughput and lowest ping, even on the edge of the tower coverage area.

8dBi Omni Antenna set

Four omni-directional antennas that need no aiming and improve the signal by 5–7 dBi. Excellent for locations with heavy trees or foliage.

Every 3 dB of gain doubles the signal. Not sure? We will recommend one when we check your address.

Can I use either antenna with the Indoor Router?5G-OD-4X4-Ant8dBi-OD-Omni

Yes, with these qualifications;

The OD 4X4 MIMO Antenna would be a hard inside installation since it mounts on a wall or pole, so we do NOT recommend this. The 8dBi Omni would work as long as you mounted the 5G ID router on a wall via the screw slots provided on the bottom of the unit and the antennas would be pointed down, which is OK. Best mounting location would be an 'external wall, a wall where the other side is outside the home'. There would need to not be any solid obstructions directly behind the mounted unit made of metal.

Do the antennas work on all three carriers?5G-OD-4X4-Ant8dBi-OD-Omni

Yes. The 4×4 MIMO antenna covers 614 to 6000 MHz and the 8dBi Omni antenna covers 698 to 3800 MHz; both work with T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon 5G Home/Business Internet, as well as private LTE/5G networks. Both antennas work on all three carriers.

Is the 4×4 MIMO antenna hard to install?5G-OD-4X4-Ant

No, it is made for easy DIY installation. The cables are built in and labeled 0, 1, 2 and 3 to match the four outputs on your HBE-5G Outdoor Router, so there is no guesswork. Use the included mount kit to mount it on the pole or stem of your choice; mounting studs are built into the metal back panel and a waterproof cable grommet keeps moisture out.

Will the 4×4 MIMO antenna work with another outdoor router?5G-OD-4X4-Ant

Yes. It is engineered for the HBE-5G Outdoor Router, but it will work with other outdoor routers.

How big is the 4×4 MIMO antenna, and is it weatherproof?5G-OD-4X4-Ant

It measures 325 × 325 × 66 mm (about 12.8 × 12.8 × 2.6 in), is IP67 rated to survive driving rain, and runs from -20°C to 65°C.

Will an antenna help if trees or hills block my signal?5G-OD-4X4-Ant8dBi-OD-Omni

Often, yes. The 8dBi Omni set is excellent for locations with heavy trees or foliage, and the 4×4 MIMO antenna is built to pull the signal through trees and hills. See the video on the 4×4 MIMO antenna page.

How much are the antennas?5G-OD-4X4-Ant8dBi-OD-Omni

The HBE-5G 4×4 MIMO Outdoor Antenna is $169.20 (MSRP $274.99), and the 8dBi Omni Antenna set is $79.00 for the set of 4 (sold only as a set). Both can be ordered online (Continental U.S. only).
